In regions where potatoes are grown, crop rotation is very important if the crop is to be affected as little as possible by diseases and pests. There is also a risk of increasing the incidence of soil-borne diseases where potatoes are planted before and after sugar beet. Because the potato is a hoed crop, it leaves the soil clean and well aerated. It therefore occupies an important place in the crop rotation. In fields planted with potatoes year after year, the incidence of soil-borne diseases rises and significant reductions in yield occur. For this reason potatoes should not be planted in the same field in consecutive years.
