Planting and Planting Time
The factor that determines planting time is soil temperature. Planting can begin once the total temperature reaches 8-10 degrees. For the Konya region the appropriate planting time is between 15 April and 15 May. Tubers 28-35 mm in diameter should be used for seed potato production, and tubers 35-60 mm in diameter for normal production. Before planting, the seed potatoes should be treated with a plant protection product. Planting depth should be 4-5 cm, depending largely on soil moisture and temperature. The planted tubers should be covered with a layer of soil at least 10-15 cm deep. Where moisture is insufficient, deep planting should be carried out.
Once the tuber has been planted in the soil, shoots form from the eyes.
The plant develops from these shoots. Until it is able to take nutrients from the soil, it meets its nutrient requirement from this mother tuber planted as seed. From a single potato plant their numbers are produced. Row spacing should be 70 cm, while within-row spacing should be 20-25 cm for seed potato production and 30-40 cm for table potato production.
